When in Stout, have no doubts

It is always a dilemma to try and envision or prepare “too much” for an event. I mean, it makes sense to double check the spelling on the PowerPoint, run through it (especially if it is choreographed with the questions on the team answering page), and get there early enough to double check the sound system.

Logistics aside, I find that hanging out prior to the event and grabbing a table with the most eclectic mix of attendees works well in sensing the vibe (man). This event at the University of Wisconsin in Menomonie was no different. By the time I had finished the coconut cream cake dessert, I had enough “playdoh” to shape into the show.

I don’t think I have played at too many university campuses so this was a real treat. A local manufacturer was hosting their “holiday” party and I was the sole entertainment. Not the first time and I knew introducing myself would need a little longer on the clock.

Connecting Wisconsin to Ireland is easy. Rolling hills, close relationship with dairy products and beer and a sports team that plays in green. The university was called Stout so a connection to the famous black stuff was made incorrectly,  but it got a chuckle and that was the intention.

Speaking to a group of mainly blue collar workers and their plus one’s requires close attention to humor and delivery. Respect is essential. Connecting to my working class Irish roots, a must and genuineness a given.

The team names were hilarious (“Green Bay Slackers” and “Past Our Bedtime” were my favorites) and the competition was fierce. Prizes added competitive edge.

I always look for signs of engagement throughout the event and I’m happy to report the interactive levels were where I wanted them to be. The applause at the end is always a good indication that they bought into the whole concept and that makes me grateful every single time.

Sconnie forever. Or at least for a Saturday night in January.
